Strange Words

We all know that when you come to a word that is strange, that you have never seen before or don't remember to sound it out. If that does not work what else do you do? Readers need several strategies to help them figure out stange words. After all how can you sound out a word and know it is right, if you have never seen it before? You have to have a back-up plan when sounding out does not work.
Also it is important to remember that you do not have to say the word out loud correctly, to understand its meaning. If you are not sure how to say it, you still need to remember it by thinking about what it means, how it is used in the story and remember what it looks like. Then when you see it again you can check your thinking and even ask someone to say for you! What do you do to figure out strange words when sounding out does not help? What is your back-up plan? How do you try to remember new words?
